At the start of the current English Premier League season, as expected Old Trafford faithfuls hoped to see an excellent partnership between the famous trio of Manchester United summer acquisitions in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and a certain vastly known tactician, Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils have done well in the league so far despite losing their derby match to fierce rivals, Manchester City. Prior to that, they were on an impressive form, winning the Community shield at the expense of current EPL champions, Leicester city. Jose Mourinho has even come out to declare that his team’s main objective this season is the Premier League title.
But on the flip side, the presence of egoistic characters in the United set-up could be a stumbling block on their path to achieve League success this season.
Zlatan widely known as the man with a big ego, he loves to be at the centre-stage of any club he finds himself, apart from his time at Barcelona where he was not given much spotlight which contributed to his fallout with Pep Guardiola. At Manchester United, Wayne Rooney has always been the Old Trafford hero and that has not changed. The English captain has deservedly become the face of the Red Devils but the emergence of the Swedish star means Wayne Rooney’s reign as the face of the club has presumably ended.
Despite Mourinho’s excellent coaching records, the United boss also come with his own baggage of controversies and a track-record of personal bust-ups with his former clubs and rival managers. Although, it appears the Portuguese has cooled down a bit but his widely known radical nature may yet surface in coming weeks if results does not go his way; His latest spat with the workmen at the club’s training facility points to the fact that it will just take only time before the former Chelsea manager exhibits the stuff he is made up of at the Theatre of dreams.
An imminent problem is Mourinho’s refusal to ‘pamper’ Rooney just like his predecessors because ‘nobody wants an unhappy Rooney’. Having dropped the English captain for their match against Feyenord on Thursday night there is a slight indication that the former Chelsea boss may be aiming for life without the Striker; it is also understood that he told the 30-year-old to prove himself before getting another contract at the club.
Apparently, the Portuguese is currently facing the same challenge his predecessors encountered on Wayne Rooney and his eventually decision may result into a breakdown of relationship between the pair.
